Artist’s Statement

I am a graduate of Boston University School of Fine Arts with an MFA, and a professor of art at Solano College in Fairfield, CA. I have exhibited extensively in galleries and museums in the United States and outside this country in Malta.

My artwork takes many forms: acrylic collages, mixed media, large charcoal drawings that incorporate pastels and paint, and acrylic paintings. My printmaking preference is for the linoleum reduction form. The physical act of carving the background away to produce an image and the layering of colors are the expressive qualities I value highly. My goal in linoleum reduction printing is not to create an edition of duplicate images, but to experiment with the blending and layering of colors to produce, each time, a unique image.

The 108 series Meditation Series was born over two years ago during a retreat. There are 108 beads in a mala (Buddhist rosary). A mala is used in conjunction with the recitation of mantras. Meditation and Tibetan Buddhism are an increasingly important part of this spiritual journey. The images are inspired by visits to Buddhist sites in Nepal, Bhutan, India, China, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.

The meditator and the creative artist share some of the same concerns. Both face the unknown knowingly, take part in the blurring of boundaries, and risk a response that they cannot always predict or control.
